Building a career in the venture capital field is highly rewarding but too much competitive. You don’t have to be the best or better, you need to be an excellent candidate with a lot of skills, knowledge, and open-mindedness to keep yourself updated about the market.
In this blog, I will try to answer the following question:
You may think that I can ask this question to Chat GPT. Honestly, my friend even I have tried asking Chat GPT, and the answer is pretty good but not up to the mark that I will answer in this blog. Chat GPT gives an average answer for all these questions and in this blog, I have compared venture partner LinkedIn profiles, venture capital jobs roles their education, skills, and experience requirements. And after comparing all these I am writing this blog.
So Let’s start
Education requirement for Venture Capital Field?
Let’s answer this question for three categories Fresher, Mid experienced, and Senior experienced.
Generally, venture capitalists prefer a Master's in Business Administration from a tier 1 university or college. Along with an MBA, some certifications such as Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), Financial Risk Manager (FRM), and Chartered Accountant (CA) will give you a very high edge.
For freshers and looking to get a start in the venture capital field then an MBA from a tier 1 or top tier 2 college will give you a starting point in the venture capital field. Also start learning skills such as SQL, Python, Data Analysis, Financial Model, etc.
For Mid and Senior Experienced professionals, generally, all the above information applies, but if you have joined the venture capital field right after your bachelor's degree then Executive MBA will also work for you. You have to make sure you keep yourself consistently updated about new technology, the latest information, and skills to grow in the venture capital field.
While comparing venture capital partner and job roles, I noticed education requirements are different for different roles. I classify this job role into two categories Executive or Associate and Lead or Senior Level.
For Executive or Associate Level:
A bachelor's degree with a high score and some extracurricular activities is the basic requirement. It’s always good to have an MBA, it will an extra edge to your resume. Along with education try to build some skills during your college days and also good to have internship experience.
For Lead or Senior Level:
Here MBA from tier 1 and top tier 2 colleges along with 2 to 3 years of experience is the prerequisite. Having additional certifications such as CFA, FRM, and others is an additional point to your profile, and will give your resume a big boost. Now if you don’t have an MBA from a top tier 2 college and also don’t have any certification, then you should need a good experience of 5 to 6 years in the field, to reach your dream destination. But you have to make sure you are consistently updated about the market.
Skills requirement for the venture capital field?
Any venture capital role requires soft and technical skills. A combination of these skills will lead you to the top. I have written down some of the soft and technical skills below but skills are not limited to this only.
